When Noor was thirteen, her beloved father died. Everyone was in shock. Her mother went into a deep depression. Suddenly, Noor was in charge. As the oldest child, she felt that she had to take care of the family and the entire household.

She worked hard, and she also went to school and took music lessons. Her life was very busy. After a few years, her mother began to recover. But Noor always felt a responsibility to care for her mother and protect her.

As Noor grew older, she studied child psychology and published some books of children’s stories. She also continued her music studies and composed for the harp.

When she was seventeen, Noor fell in love with a fellow music student named Goldberg. He was a gifted pianist, and he was Jewish. Noor’s family objected to their relationship, even though Goldberg studied to be a Sufi at Fazal Manzil. Their objection may have been partly because of his religion, but was mainly because he was from a working-class background, while Noor was descended from royalty. In addition, they felt that Goldberg was overbearing and needy.

Noor’s family was very protective of her, but Noor was stubborn. She and Goldberg got engaged and stayed together for six years. When World War II began, though, she broke off their engagement. She said that she wanted to be free to serve as a nurse on the front lines or get involved in some other way.
